These results are based on a study of 33,000 Swedish women are active enough to eat chocolate, the less likely suffered a stroke. Research has also linked, consumption of cocoa is very good for heart health.

“Because this study based on observations, the findings of this study can not prove that chocolate is a lower risk of stroke,” said Susanna Larsson of the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm Reuters Health in an email.

Larsson sure chocolate has health benefits, but warned not to eat too much because it can be counterproductive. Larsson recommends eating dark chocolate because it contains more cocoa than sugar and milk.

The findings of Larsson and his colleagues published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, intercepting data from a mammography study that included a report of how many women eat chocolate in 1997 with the 49-83 year age range.

Over the next decade, there were 1549 women who had a stroke. Among those with the highest intake of chocolate every week more than 45 grams, there are 2.5 percent had a stroke, every 1,000 women per year. That figure was 7.8 per 1,000 among women who ate chocolate less (less than 8.9 grams per week).

The scientists speculate that substances known as flavonoids, in particular, called flavanols, may be responsible for the apparent effects of chocolate on health.

According to Larsson, flavonoids have been shown to cut high blood pressure, a risk factor for stroke, and improve other blood factors associated with heart health.

Nearly 800,000 Americans suffer strokes each year, with about one-sixth of them are dying and many are disabled. For those at high risk, doctors recommend that blood pressure medications, quitting smoking, exercising more and eating healthier foods.
