Depression sufferers experience overwhelming and debilitating feelings of pain, hopelessness and sadness. Depression is normal when going through major life changes, but intense feelings or moods that last longer and interrupt your life may require therapy and medication. Though this is a delicate problem that should not be taken lightly, the following steps may help you find peace during your overwhelming depression.
Talk it Out
See a psychologist, counselor or other type of therapist. No matter what the title, seeing a licensed counselor who can talk you through your problems and feelings can help you begin to understand what exactly you are going through and how to proceed.
Talk to a friend. It may be very difficult to reach out, especially if those close to you don’t understand, but having someone to talk to makes you feel less alone and more able to tackle your issues.
Pray or confide in a clergy member. If you are, or once were, spiritual, trusting in your higher power may renew your spirit and give you peace. People deal with finding help differently, so turn to a person that makes you feel comfortable.
Write, draw or listen to music. Do something creative to alleviate stress and turn your emotion from something locked inside your head to something you can physically see or hear. Search the Internet for depression blogs or forums. Turn the overwhelming depression into something you can control.
Think positively. Yes, this is difficult when you are down, but if you keep telling yourself you will feel better, you might just start to believe it. Retrain your mind so you can continue to feel better about yourself and your life.
Exercise. Regular exercise has been proven to help reduce the effects of depression and anxiety. Yoga is especially beneficial as it involves controlled breathing and meditation.
Get a massage or take a bubble bath. When your body is relaxed, your mind can relax with it.
Take medication. Your medical doctor or psychiatrist can prescribe an anti-depressant and closely watch your emotional and physical symptoms as your treatment progresses. Medication can be temporary to jump-start your system into feeling better or may become a long-term option. Always talk to a therapist along with taking medication-the combination has a higher success rate than taking medication alone.
