It’s spring time. We, Karachiites, have already said goodbye to the winter season. Well, people in Lahore and Islamabad are still enjoying the cold weather but they too are looking forward to spring. Talk about spring and one thinks of beautiful colours and prints.
Designers have already launched their spring/lawn collections and one can easily spot billboards of lawn exhibitions all over the city.
Recently, Moazzam Abbasi, a Hyderabad-based designer, launched his spring collection in a lively ceremony at PAF Museum, Karachi.
The show was part of the inaugural session of the conference organised by the doctors association of SAARC and this was their 8th meeting where doctors from all the member countries came down to attend the conference.
Starting on time, the audience enjoyed 40 minutes of Moazzam’s creations in interesting cuts and styles. His vivacious collection was like a breath of fresh air where vibrant colours were thrown in together but they were toned down with the addition of dark colours such as navy blue and black with red, emerald and gold. The collection was a festive one where the banarsi cloth was added with georgettes, whereas silk and chiffon duppatas had been added as embellishments. This was certainly Moazzam’s creative innovation where he experimented with two different fabrics and the outcome was certainly striking.
Top of the line models like Vinnie, Iraj, Sunita, Maha, Fauzia and Rabab flaunted Moazzam’s scenic dresses. The best part about the collection was the wearability factor attached to it. Models, mostly adorned in Shalwar Kameez and saris, looked pretty much like us in the sense that they were not over or under dressed and the overall appearance they were carrying was easily relatable.
Ace stylist Huma did the makeup and styling, which gelled well with the complete look of the models.
After leaving Sabs salon, this was her first solo show and she definitely did a great job.
The delightful background music was the selection of DJ Aziz – a name synonymous with music and parties. The show, choreographed by Moazzam, was a well organised one as there were no obvious hitches or flaws.
Moazzam’s design philosophy revolves around the comfort factor. His label Riwayat is all about wearable clothes. ”Something that looks good on the ramp will not necessarily end up looking good on you. I design my clothes keeping the wearability factor in mind. Wear anything that makes you feel happy. Wearing bright colours gives you energy but if you wear dull colours you will automatically start feeling dreary,” he says, observing the change in the behaviour of people based on the way they dress. As for the trend this season, he predicts that plazzo trousers will make a comeback this season.
His future plans include many interesting shows, which he does not want to disclose right now. He laments the fact that designers cannot do exclusive shows on their own due to lack of funds and resources. ”Mostly shows are sponsored or are a part of an event as we, designers, simply cannot afford all the expenditure. I wish there were places where we could showcase our creations with no strings attached.”
Well, even with no places available to showcase their work our designers seem to be doing good all on their own. The collection for the new season is not only exquisite but it also offering something new to everyone. Grab your wallets ladies and get ready to shop, as for the men… well they should be happy with just the fact that the women around them look stunning.
