About 8 million people have been made homeless by the monsoon floods in Pakistan, prompting U.N. officials to call it the largest humanitarian disaster in living memory. While fundraising for flood victims continues to lag, one fashion icon is attempting to do something about it.
Fashion for Relief: Facing a crowd of eager fans during NYC’s Fashion’s Night Out, Naomi Campbell signed special-edition T-shirts, raising money for flood victims in Pakistan.
I caught up with Naomi Campbell at the Dolce & Gabbana (D&G) store during Fashion’s Night Out last Friday in NYC. Facing hundreds of eager fans, Campbell was on hand to sign special-edition D&G T-shirts that bear her iconic image, honoring her 25-year career in the fashion industry. All proceeds raised from the $200 T’s will benefit flood relief efforts in Pakistan, Campbell said.
“We decided that all proceeds from the T-shirts will go to support Pakistan flood victims. I have no goal for how much can be raised. No amount can match what these people have been through.”

That’s the conclusion I drew after reading the results of a new study in the journal Research in Social Stratification and Mobility. The researchers argued that there is a strong correlation between the number of books a family owns and a child’s academic track record.
